Due to its large dimensions the Northern German Basin is of fundamental importance for the development of deep geothermics in Germany. For this purpose, the development of appropriate utilization concepts is crucial for the encountered lowly permeable sediments of low porosities. The GeneSys project of the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) aims at an exemplary demonstration of the geothermal use of those sedimentary rocks in Hanover. The almost 4 km deep GeneSys borehole was designed to supply energy to heat the GEOZENTRUM in Hannover.

In order to achieve this, the following innovative methods will be applied:

  • deployment of single-well concepts
  • application of water-frac techniques to sedimentary rocks

The GeneSys project consists of two sub-projects:

Basic data on GeneSys Hannover:

• Target formation: Middle Bunter Sandstone
• Temperature: approx. 160°C in the target horizon
• Thermal output: 2 MW
• Production rate: approx. 25 m3/h
• Drilling depth: 3.901 m

The Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources is responsible for the realisation of the GeneSys project Hanover as a pilot project. Accompanying research is conducted at the Leibniz Institute for Applied Geophysics and funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.

The GeneSys project of the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources in Hanover aims at a development and realisation of innovative concepts for the direct usage of heat from geothermal energy.
