Due to its large extension, the North German Basin is of significant importance for the further development of deep geothermal energy in Germany. For this purpose, the development of suitable exploitation concepts for low permeability sedimentary rocks is essential. With GeneSys the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) develops a showcase project for the geothermal utilisation of such sedimentary rocks in Hannover. A new concept for the direct use of geothermal energy (one-well-concept) is implemented and tested by drilling a well down to a depth of nearly 4 km. The realisation of this concept requires the creation of a water frac within the deep-seated sedimentary layers. The project aims at demonstrating that the implementation of the one-well-concept presents a comparatively location independent option to heat large facility complexes such as hospitals, office blocks etc.

GeneSys Hannover - key data:

  • Location: GEOZENTRUM Hannover, Groß Buchholz, Hannover
  • Target formation: Middle Buntsandstein
  • Temperature: ~160 °C in the target formation
  • Drilled depth: 3.901 m

Funding:

The GeneSys-Project is carried out by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources, funded by the The Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi). Accompanying research was contributed by the Leibniz Institute for Applied Geophysics from 12/01/2008 to 12/31/2013 funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) under Grant No. 0325097.
